There are stages to your career. Early, you must do 3 things:
- Do what you love.
- Write what you know.
- Work your craft.
After you get a break.
- Remember, this is your opportunity to prove yourself.
- Get good representation.
- Have fun. This might be your only time.
This is when most acts fail, because now is time to repeat the first 3 things. If people dig what you do you can move on to the next stage of your career. Become a commodity. The next (fill in the blank) album will garner attention off of nothing but the name. But at this stage, follow these simple rules.
- Lead. Don’t coast.
- Be humble. You’re on top.
- Work your craft.
And if you are so luck to make the leap to the final stage you can become a lifestyle. Kings of Leon are trying to do that now with…a clothing line. Yes, believe it. http://bit.ly/8S0hXB
Harley Davidson did clothes that represent their attitude and lifestyle. It’s more than gear. It’s a statement, “Hey, I’m one of them.”
Now you’re a brand. Your clothes aren’t the brand. Your band is a brand. You’re not a fad. You’re not a thing. You’re not a happening. You are a lifestyle. Tell me the difference between a U2 fan and a Rolling Stone fan and you’re starting to get it. Be true to your brand and you can write your own ticket. And if you’re smart…
You work your craft.
